Job Description: For the first several months, the Oknooshoon therapy dog handler will raise, socialize, and train our dog(s) in the therapy dog training program, with full guidance from Oknooshoon. Once ready, the therapy dog handler will conduct canine-assisted interventions with our therapy dogs at facilities for individuals with behavioral, developmental, and physical disabilities. (Please see the definitions of important terms in the glossary below.)
Working Hours: Full Time (40 hours per week)
Part time (20 hours per week)
Duration: Initial 1 year contract with possibility of extension (3 month probationary period)
Primary Responsibilities:
- Care for and train therapy dog(s) with Oknooshoon guidance
- Handle dogs during canine-assisted interventions sessions
Requirements:
- Proficiency in English and Armenian
- Proficiency with Google Drive and social media
- Access to a reliable computer and internet connection for working from home
Preference will be given to those who have:
- The ability to house their partner dogs
- Dog care and training experience
- Experience working with people with disabilities
- A car
- No other household pets
- An educational background, degree, or professional licensing in mental healthcare,
physical therapy, occupational therapy, or related fields
Benefits:

Glossary of Terms
Canine-Assisted Interventions: When a therapy dog and handler visit a person or group of people to improve their wellness outcomes. If the handler is a therapist or is working with a therapist in a goal-directed setting, this would constitute canine-assisted therapy. If not, it is canine-assisted activities.
Socialize: Exposing a dog to a variety of experiencing during their critical period of development so they develop positive associations with a wide range of environments.
Therapy Dog: A dog that has been trained and certified to conduct canine-assisted interventions with their handler. They must be properly socialized, receive practical training for the behaviors needed, and have a strong relationship with their handler.
Therapy Dog Handler: An individual who is trained and certified to work with a therapy dog. They must undergo didactic education regarding dog training, dog behavior, and the human populations they will work with, as well as practical training with their dog. They must have a strong relationship with their dog and be able to advocate for them in the settings they will work in.
Train: Teaching a dog specific behaviors they will need to for sessions.
